Leaves are alternate, fascicled at the top of shoots, entire on the margin, coriaceous, deep green and lustrous above, glaucous beneath.
It grows in deep mountains in the warm temperate zone. In Hokkaido and Japan Sea side, Ezoyuzuriha (variety of this species, var. humile) is found.
The wood is used for utensils, turneries. The leaves and shoots have been used for new year's decorations in Japan.
