Leaves are clustered 3 togather at the top of shoots, rhombeo-oval, entire on the margin, thinly coriaceous.

Petioles are villose with white hairs.

Bright purple flowers open in April to May.

This tree is common on mountain ridges and cliffs in the cool temperate zone of Pacific side of Honshu.

It is planted for garden trees.
