Leaves are opposite, oblong to elliptic, acuminate at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base, denticulate with aristate tips on the margin, subdensely hispid on both surfaces and scabrous when touched.

Petioles are 1-9cm long, pubescent, sulcate above.

Flowers open in July to September, pale purplish, in terminal flat-topped densely hispidulouscymes.

Capsules ripening brownish in November to December.

This hydrangea is very common in valleys on the Pacific side of central Honshu.

The withered leaves are used as a substitute for tobacco.
