Leaves are alternate and clustered at the top of shoots, membranous, 3-foliolate, seemingly nearly entire on the margin.

Petioles are 5-12 cm long and round.

Flowers in May to June, in umbels gathered in terminal corymbose-panicles on dwarf shoots.

Fruits berrylike, maturing purplish black in September to October.

This tree is commonly found in Japan, favering rather dry places such as on ridges.

The wood is used for boes, wooden clogs, chop-sticks, chip bonnets.
