Leaves are alternate, broadly elliptic to obovate, abruptly caudate-acuminate at the apex, obtuse, rounded or cordate at the base, simply or subduplicately serrate with triangular mucronate teeth tipped with glands, dark green above, glaucescent beneath.

Petioles are sulcate above, glabrous, with 2 orbicular glands on the upper portion.

Flowers open in May with new leaves.

Drupes maturing purplish-black in July.

This is a representative cherry in northern Japan.

The wood is used for buildings, furnitures, utensils, carving. It is planted for ornamental purposes in northern Japan.
