A large deciduous tree with purplish brown smooth bark, but in old trees the bark is fissured and roughened.

Leaves are alternate, chartaceous, acute at the apex, irregularly serrate or double serrate on the margin.

Petioles are tomentose.

Flowers open in May in terminal 2-5 flowered corymbs.

It grows in the cool temperate zone, but not prevailing.

The wood is used for utensils, furnitures. The bark yields a yellow dye.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
