Ligustrum japonicum


An evergreen small tree with pale grayish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are opposite, ovate or elliptic, acute with an obtuse tip, acute or subrounded at the base, entire, coriaceous, glabrous, dark green and lustrous above, yellowish-green and punctulate beneath.

Flowers open in June on new shoots, bisexual, white.

Fruits maturing purplish black in November.

This Japanese privet is widely found in the warm temperate and subtropical zone.

It is a common tree in the thickets near the sea, and on rocky cliffs facing the sea.

The wood is used for handles of instruments, walking sticks, toothpicks.

Distribution ; Honshu (Boshu to west), Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Korea
