Rhamnella franguloides


A deciduous small tree with brownish dark gray smooth bark.

Leaves arranged in an orixate phyllotaxis, obovate-oblong or oblong, caudately acuminate, rotundate or obtuse at the base, finely serrulate, green and somewhat glossy above, paler and glabrous or pubescent on the midrib beneath.

Flowers in May to June, 5-15 in axillary short-peduncled clusters, pale yellow.

Drupes ripening yellow to red and ultimately purplish-black in September to October.

This tree is found wild at moderately moist sites in the warm-temperate zone.

The wood is used for alcove post, utensils. It is planted as a garden tree.

Distribution ; Honshu (Kanagawa and Kinki to west), Shikoku, Kyushu, South Korea, China
