Mizume
Betula grossa


A large deciduous tree with dark greyish smooth bark.

The bark and shoot smells of salicylic acid methyl.

Leaves are alternate, subcordate at the base, serrulate on the margin and with 10-15 pairs of veins.

Flowers in May with leaves, monoecious.

This species is widely found in the cool and warm temperate zone as scattered tree, but rare in Japan Sea area.

It is called Azusa or Yogusominebari.

The wood is used for furnitures, flooring, paper pulp.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
