A medium sized deciduous tree with reddish brown smooth shinning bark.

Leaves are alternate, oblong, acute at the apex, remotely serrulate, pale green and sericeous all over beneath.

Petioles are short glabrescent 1 cm long.

White flowers open solitary in the axils of new shoots in June to September.

This species is common in the beech forest of the cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for utensils, turneries, alcove posts. It is planted for garden trees.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
