Hanaikada
Helwingia japonica


A deciduous shrub with green branchlets.

Leaves are alternate, acuminate at the apex, serrulate with briste-like teeth, deep green above, paler beneath.

Pale green flowers open in fascicle on the upper surface of the leaves in April to May.

Fruits ripen purplish black in August to October.

This tree is common in woods and thickets on hills and low mountain of the cool to warm temperate zone.

It is planted for garden trees. The young leaves are eaten as boiled green.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
