A large ever green tree with reddish brown bark, peeling off in scales.

Leaves are short, deep green, quadrangular.

This species is indigenous to the subalpine forests of Hokkaido and Honshu, around moors or mountain ridges.

Pure stands of this spruce are often found.

The wood is used for buildings, paper pulp, musical instruments.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Southern Saghalien, Southern Kuriles
